10 Photos that Make Switzerland a Dream Destination
Many Southeast Asians like me have dreamt of seeing snow capped mountains, waterfalls cascading down rugged cliffs and experiencing snow as a dream holiday. The images of Europe that we saw on TV as kids are etched into our minds forever. This paradise always seemed just beyond our reach, which is why I was overjoyed when my Schengen Visa was approved. When I had the chance to visit Switzerland and other countries in Europe in March – April 2016, I knew that I wouldn’t be disappointed. Switzerland is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, and the images that I had seen as a kid, weren’t even close to replicating the beauty of real life. It’s now been a while since I have been, so I’ve decided that I’m going to start my Switzerland post series by showing you 10 photos that make Switzerland a dream destination for every traveler.
LUCERNE
Lucerne is one of the first cities I visited outside of Zurich, Switzerland. It has so many points of interest, literally everything a traveler could wish for; a beautiful lake, impressive panoramic views of the mountains and a medieval Chapel Bridge that forms the centrepiece of Lucerne’s townscape. It is considered to be one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe. Historic houses decorated with frescoes also line the picturesque town squares. I was satisfied just by walking around the city, it’s just one of those places where if you had lost your itinerary it wouldn’t matter at all.
MOUNT RIGI
From Lucerne you can get to Mount Rigi via a combination of boat, cogwheel railway and a cable car ride. The journey to Mount Rigi is almost as beautiful as the destination itself! Mount Rigi offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Alps, of 13 lakes and over the entire Swiss Mittelland through to Germany and France. Being on top was very exhilarating, riding a cable car, spending the night in a log cabin and waking up with this view just made this a dream destination for me. If you have planned a long trip I would also suggest taking a trip to Mount Pilatus, as it is also a stunning place.
TOWN SQUARES
Cobbled streets and fairytale castles, decorated fountains and frescoed houses. It’s not hard to find such delights in many Swiss towns, largely thanks to centuries of neutrality. The best place to observe this is when you go to the town square. People watching is often an underrated part of traveling, and just joining in with the local Swiss in their daily activities will make you understand how their lifestyle can be really relaxing.
TOBLERONE AND MATTERHORN
One of my readers, Eimee said that Switzerland reminds her of Toblerone. Indeed, no matter what size, flavour, or colour Toblerone you buy; the mountain on the packaging of the popular chocolate is visible. It is said the famous Matterhorn gave Theodor Tobler the inspiration for the triangular shape of his chocolate. Whether that is true or not, it really is an amazing experience to eat toblerone whilst looking at the Matterhorn.
Speaking of chocolates…
SWISS CHOCOLATES
Switzerland is very famous for its sweet delights. Everywhere around the country, you see different products and I have to admit, I tried to have them all. However, I’d have to go back for more! Some of the most famous Swiss chocolate brands include: Lindt, Toblerone, Frey and Milka. Please let me know your favourite chocolates in the comments below so I can have more to add to my list!
ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDINGS
Centuries old buildings, cathedrals and universities are a tourist destination in itself. A day can be spent just walking along Zurich center and exploring the sights and sounds of the city.
TRAIN RIDES
The most scenic train ride I’ve ever experienced was in Switzerland. Imagine going through a mountain and coming out on the other side but also getting glimpses of waterfalls and snow covered peaks. It’s one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had.
WINTER SPORTS
Winter sports are very popular in Switzerland. Snowboarding, skiing and many others are available to try for both beginners and professionals. Skiing in Switzerland may not be cheap, but packages are available and you can be sure to find charming villages and quality slopes. You can even experience snow in the summer in Mount Titlis!
GARDEN PARADISE
Switzerland isn’t just white snowcapped mountains, during spring and summer, it turns into a charming and beautiful garden paradise. The slopes are filled with green grass and the flowers bloom! Oh and yes, there are cows and sheep roaming there too!
CHALETS AND VALLEYS
Finally, one of the best things to see in the country are its charming houses and chalets. Combined with the classic Swiss scenery – high peaks, sheer valleys and cool lakes – that makes for great summer hiking and relaxation.
So here’s our 10 photos that make Switzerland a dream destination, what else do you think about when it comes to this country? Oh, and if you’re heading to Zurich, check out these cheap things to do there! I’d have to try that, when I get to go back! Accommodation in Switzerland can be found here too.
WELCOME
